  • Episode 166: John L. Steadman Discusses H.P. Lovecraft & The Black Magickal Tradition

Episode 166: John L. Steadman Discusses H.P. Lovecraft & The Black Magickal Tradition

    Live Tue. March 7th, 2017 8pm EST on Para-X-Radio.com

Jason M. Colwell welcomes John L. Steadman to the show for the first time to discuss his research on H.P. Lovecraft and Black Magic.

John L. Steadman is a scholar of both H. P. Lovecraft and western occultism and has been a magickal practitioner for over thirty years, working with various covens and small groups of initiates. He has a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University; a Master of Arts from the University of Virginia; and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin. In addition to his academic credentials, he holds the following degrees in the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.) USA: Magickian (II°), Man (I°) and Minerval (0°).

Modern practicing occultists have argued that renowned horror writer H. P. Lovecraft was in possession of in-depth knowledge of black magick. Literary scholars claim that he was a master of his genre and craft, and his findings are purely psychological, nothing more. Was Lovecraft a practitioner of the dark arts himself? Was he privileged to knowledge that cannot be otherwise explained?  Whether you believe Lovecraft had supernatural powers or not, no one can argue against Lovecraft’s profound influence on the contemporary black arts and the darker currents of western occultism.

  • Episode 162: Yasmin Henkesh Discusses Trance Dancing With The Jinn

Episode 162: Yasmin Henkesh Discusses Trance Dancing With The Jinn

Andrieh Vitimus and Jason M. Colwell welcome Yasmin Henkesh to the show, for the first time to discuss her first book, Trance Dancing With The Jinn. We are pleased to present her years of knowledge, from cultures often misunderstood by our own.

Yasmin Henkesh has always had dancing in her blood. A dedicated performer, teacher, trainer and workshop instructor, she now has over 40 years of cabaret and folkloric Middle Eastern Dance experience. A native of Washington D.C., she took her first belly dance class at age fifteen at “Adriana’s Mecca of Middle Eastern Dance” in upper Georgetown, a short bus ride from her high school, Sidwell Friends. Later, at Kenyon College, she spent most of her time in the theater department and was fortunate to perform as “the belly dancer” in C. C. Pyle and the Bunyon Derby, a play directed by Paul Newman to inaugurate the college’s new theater.

After graduating, she followed the siren call to Europe to dance professionally in Paris, London and the south of France. This was at the end of the 1970s when oil-rich Arabs were just discovering these wonderful cities. Royalty and other wealthy Arabs frequented the clubs where she performed, and management brought the best of the Arab world’s artists to please them; Sabah, Walid Toufiq, Ahmed Adawia, Mohammed El Aizabi, Hassan Abou al-Saoud, Khamis Henkesh, Mona Said, Shoo Shoo Amin and Sahar Hamdi were among the many talented acts she shared the stage with.

Bitten by the bug, Yasmin decided to go sell sand in the desert so to speak, and moved to Cairo to work. Khamis Henkesh’s older brother Sayed took her under his wing and became her band leader. She appeared nightly at The Auberge on the Sharia al Haram and at the Holiday Inn Giza, in addition to countless weddings and private functions. She studied Arabic at the American University of Cairo and researched Egyptian trance dancing.

After a number of years she became discouraged with the way women were treated in the Middle East and returned to London to obtain an MBA from London Business School – putting herself through school by dancing at Mona Said’s famous club Omar Khayyam on Regent Street. Afterwards she spent over a decade as a film distributor in Paris until returning to the Washington DC area in the early 1990’s. She taught Egyptian style Middle Eastern dance at Joy of Motion, one of the area’s premier dance schools, until she left to open her own studio in Bethesda, Md., Serpentine Dance. She is known for her lively, fun and invigorating classes that help students connect with their natural rhythm and passion. Her widely acclaimed international workshops are known for her depth of research, grasp of the region’s dance history and easy-to-follow movement explanations.

In 2005 Yasmin created Sands of Time Music to share with her students the rich, multifaceted music she fell in love with in Egypt. The Henkesh Brothers, from a long line of Cairo’s Golden Era Mohammed Ali Street musicians, agreed to help and can now be heard on many of her label’s albums (all on Amazon). Sayed also recorded many of Cairo’s best folkloric artists to help preserve the genre before it disappeared forever into the amalgam of World Music.

  • Episode 161: Antero Alli Discusses The Eight-Circuit Brain

Episode 161: Antero Alli Discusses The Eight-Circuit Brain

    Live Tue. Jan. 31st, 2017 8pm EST on Para-X-Radio.com

Andrieh Vitimus and Jason M. Colwell welcome Antero Alli back for a second week, because we are so impressed by his work.  Antero will be talking to us about his work on The Eight-Circuit BrainThe Eight-Circuit Brain advances and expands the material in Alli’s groundbreaking book, Angel Tech, a compendium of techniques and practical applications based on Dr. Timothy Leary’s 8-Circuit Brain model. After more than twenty years of research and experimentation, Antero’s earlier findings are significantly updated and enriched in this new body of work.

In 1977 Antero was inspired by the Paratheatre of Jerzy Grotowski and over the next four decades, he combined his early theatre experience and training (see below) towards the creation of his own paratheatre medium — as documented in his book, “Towards an Archeology of the Soul” (Vertical Pool, 2003), in four videos (1992-2012), and in academia by Nicoletta Isar, Professor at the Institute of Art History,Copenhagen University (2008). Between 1975 and 2005, Antero wrote, directed, produced and performed in numerous experimental theatre productions. In 2005, Antero stopped creating theatre and wrote and directed a series of feature-length art films — including “The Greater Circulation” (2005; 93 min) a critically acclaimed cinematic treatment of Rainer Maria Rilke’s “Requiem for a Friend“, “The Invisible Forest” (2008; 111 min) featuring the radical ideas of French Surrealist, Antonin Artaud, “To Dream of Falling Upwards“(2011; 120 min), exploring the occult worlds of rural and urban sorcery and “The Book of Jane” (2013; 115 min.), an urban fable of Feminine initiation. In late 2015 Antero ended his 23-year era of filmmaking and returned to his roots in experimental theatre in Portland Oregon where he also continues his paratheatre group work.
