Episode 84: Christopher Penczak Discusses Buddha, Christ, Merlin: Three Wise Men For Our Age

Live 12-18-12 on Para X Radio!

Andrieh Vitimus and Jason Colwell are proud to present Christopher Penczak! A man who needs no introduction, joins us to discuss Buddha, Christ and Merlin!

Christopher Penczak is a Witch, teacher, writer and healing practitioner. His practice draws upon the foundation of both modern and traditional Witchcraft blended with the wisdom of mystical traditions from across the globe as a practitioner and teacher of shamanism, tarot, Reiki healing, herbalism, astrology and Qabalah. He is the founder of the Temple of Witchcraft tradition and system of magickal training based upon the material of his books and classes. He is an ordained minister primarily serving the New Hampshire and Massachusetts pagan and metaphysical communities through public rituals, private counsel and teaching, though he travels extensively teaching throughout the United States.

Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on May 10, 1973, Christopher was raised in an Italian/Polish family while living in Salem, NH. After twelve years of Catholic school and becoming an avowed agnostic, he initially pursued an interest in chemistry, stemming from a childhood fascination with alchemy and herbalism. As a youth, he had an out of body experience, passing out in a fourth grade science class, but observing the whole scene in spirit, from above the room. While in high school, he was visited by an apparition of his recently deceased great aunt. These two experiences made him question his dedication to science and pursue a study of the mystical and occult, as well as his artistic pursuits. He attended the University of Massachusetts as a vocal major, earning a Bachelor of Music Performance/Music Business in 1995 and set his sights on becoming a full time performer. While studying classical voice, he founded a band called Doctor Soulshine that fused mystical imagery and shamanic concepts to traditional heavy rock music.

While in college, a long time friend and teacher introduced Christopher to the principles of witchcraft, meditation, tarot and spell work. At first he was skeptical, but his experience with a healing spell at a full Moon ritual was enough to convince him that there was truth to these ideas and he sought to understand more. He took classes with Laurie Cabot, in her Cabot Tradition with an emphasis on Witchcraft As A Science. He was fascinated with the science and philosophy of her teaching, grounding witchcraft in sound thinking and personal experience. A psychic healing experience left him with a sense of empowerment and spiritual connection. After this initial training, he studied with an assortment of witches, shamans, yogis, psychic readers and healers in the New England area, developing an eclectic path of personal witchcraft. He later focused on the healing arts, completing training as a Reiki Master (Teacher) in the Usui-Tibetan and Shamballa traditions and certification as a flower essence consultant and herbalist.

After graduation from college, Christopher began work at the A&R department of Fort Apache, a recording studio and record label in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He soon found himself leading meditations and ritual groups for friends seeking to know more about the Craft. During his time in the Boston area, Christopher experimented with the ideas he later wrote about in his book City Magick: Urban Rituals, Spells and Shamanism. The initial ritual group formed the nucleus of the first Temple of Witchcraft series.

Although having no real interest in teaching formally, Christopher received a message during a meditation in 1998 to start teaching more and begin writing. Thinking it was his imagination, Christopher ignored it, saying to himself and the universe, “I’m too busy with my music career. If you want me to teach, give me the time.” The next week he was laid off from his job and had plenty of time. Although with a booming economy and many job opportunities, Christopher had no luck finding a position in the music industry, or a more traditional office job. When he posted a few flyers about meditation and witchcraft classes at a local shop, the response was immediate and he began teaching classes in his home. Soon he was asked to present workshops at local new age stores and centers. Christopher’s practice focuses on introspection, encouraging others to find their own path and create their own traditions while having a solid foundation in the art, science and spirituality of witchcraft.

Christopher published The Second Road Newsletter, A Journal of Alternative Spirituality (1997-2002) as a quarterly community forum for not only paganism in New England, but also for other traditions of spirituality and healing. He wrote many articles for local and national publications including Wisdom, Horns & Crescents and Green Egg. He has contributed as a columnist to both New Witch and New Worlds magazine.

In 2000, Christopher Penczak was ordained as a minister by the Universal Brotherhood Movement, Inc. He has been a part time faculty member at the North Eastern Institute of Whole Health and was a founding member of the Gifts of Grace Foundation, a non-profit organization in New Hampshire made up of individuals from diverse spiritual backgrounds dedicated to joyful service to the local communities. He also serves on the Town Council of the Between the Worlds Queer Pagan Brotherhood Festival as director of publicity.

Christopher is a founding member of the Coven of a New Dawn, operating in various incarnations since 1999, and co-founder of the gay men’s group The Circle of the Sacred Thyrsus (2006-). In 2008 Christopher was initiated as a High Priest in the Cabot Tradition of Witchcraft by Laurie Cabot, alongside Sully Erma of the rock band Godsmack. He continues to offer workshop for the Cabot Academy of Witchcraft.

Christopher has penned over fifteen books on spirituality, witchcraft, healing and magick and has won multiple awards, most notably from the Coalition of Visionary Resources. He continues to write books and articles while holding a full time teaching and healing practice in New Hampshire, where he lives with his partners, science fiction/fantasy/RPG author Stephen Kenson and psychic Adam Sartwell.

Many paths to the center. Buddhism, Christianity, Paganism… three different spiritual paths to truth. Award-winning author and teacher Christopher Penczak (The Mystic Foundation, Magick of Reiki, and others) considers the wisdom-teachings of exemplars of these paths, and the practices of their traditions, looking at the different ways they help us to attain greater spiritual understanding, and how their insights and methods compliment one another. Filled with stories, references to essential lore and practices, and comparisons between them, this book is valuable to the individual spiritual seeker or as a guide for a group course or discussion on different spiritual traditions.

Episode 83: Robert Bruce Discusses Astral Projection

Andrieh Vitimus and Jason M. Colwell are proud to present our favorite author on Astral Projection!

    Robert’s Bio:

Let me introduce myself and answer some of the questions you may be asking yourself. To start with: “Who is Robert Bruce?”

Really I’m just a normal guy, but many years ago I went through a time where my life had just been turned upside down. All against my best intentions and programming for being good and spiritual… my life had become a spiritual train-wreck. Something was missing. I knew I had to do something important with my life, but I had NO IDEA how to proceed from this point, or how to further develop my spiritual connections and psychic abilities to truly enter The Greater Spiritual Reality.

Well, it wasn’t exactly easy to”Figure it out”. I read mountains of books, went to seminars, sat in psychic development circles, worked in healing centers, and generally tried everything I could that made any sense to me at the time. The real “breakthroughs” for me came not only from an enormous amount of meditation and energy work and experimentation, but also through my association with NATURALLY psychic and spiritually gifted people. Most of these were not famous people. They were just very good at what they did. These are the quiet achievers that you won’t really get to know in a spiritual sense unless you actually work with them. As I learned from these spiritual practitioners, I noticed that they did things in certain ways that often didn’t make sense to me. The more I saw the things that “didn’t make sense” actually WORKING with spirituality in the front lines, the more I began thinking that I might be on the verge of discovering something big.  To make a long story short, I made rapid progress by learning from these “naturals”. In a way, the energies of these people “rubbed off” on me. This gave me a “good start” in my continuing exploration of The Greater Spiritual Reality.

Years later, when I once again got to the point where I was banging my proverbial head against a brick wall, my Higher Self manifested to me and gave SUPERB ADVICE that took me to the next level. This advice was, in brief: that I had to purge my “belief system” and work it all out for myself by “doing it”. . . by walking the talk. There is no other way to learn how to do all this but “to learn by doing”. And thus my task in life was finally revealed: to bring NEW spiritual knowledge and techniques to the world. . . and to create a NEW “yard stick” that people and seekers and spiritual practitioners could trust. Along the way to now, I discovered many useful and fascinating things, and I have written several bestselling books from my personal experience. Now I am sharing my knowledge here on the Internet in my video-based programs and eBooks.

  • Episode 76: John Michael Greer Discusses The Wealth of Nature and Blood of the Nature

Episode 76: John Michael Greer Discusses The Wealth of Nature and Blood of the Nature

    Live Tue. Oct. 2, 2012 on Para-X-Radio.com

Andrieh and Jason welcome John Michael Greer to the show to discuss his latest two books; The Wealth of Nature: Economics as if Survival Mattered and Blood of the Earth: An Essay on Magic and Peak Oil

In these times that we live in if we are going to have successful lives we have to prepare for the fact that economic times are changing. These books talk openly about how things are changing and what steps we need to take to compensate.

Born in 1962 in Bremerton, Washington State, USA, John Michael Greer was raised in a nonreligious family but developed an intense interest in spirituality, mythology, and esoteric traditions in childhood. He began studying the Golden Dawn tradition of Hermetic magic in his teens, and followed the “golden thread” of esoteric teachings into a wide range of related subjects, from martial arts and Asian mystical traditions to environmental science and sacred geometry, in the years that followed.

He attended college at Western Washington University (1980-1983) and the University of Washington (1991-1993), graduating from the latter magna cum laude in 1993 with a BA in Comparative History of Ideas. In the interval between his college years he married and worked at a variety of jobs while developing his skills as a writer. His first published book, Paths of Wisdom, a handbook of Golden Dawn cabalistic philosophy, was released by Llewellyn in 1996, and has been followed by eight other books to date.

Dissatisfaction with some aspects of the Golden Dawn system, especially its lack of contact with the realities of green nature, led him to Druidry. In 1995 he joined the Order of Bards Ovates and Druids (OBOD) began its correspondence study program, and progressed through the three degrees of Bard, Ovate and Druid, receiving his certificate as a Druid Companion of the Order in 2002. In 2003 he was honored with OBOD’s Mount Haemus Award for Druid scholarship. In 2001 he also joined the Druid fellowship Ar nDraiocht Fein (ADF). He remains active in both these organizations.

His journey to the northern chair, the seat of the Grand Archdruid in the Ancient Order of Druids in America, was made complex by the Order’s own difficulties during and after the resignation of Grand Archdruid Robert Johnson in 1998. Unbeknownst to him, his first attempt to contact AODA – after reading about it in a reference book, and finding its traditional Druid Revival approach intensely appealing – was made during the middle of this crisis and went nowhere. He finally succeeded in making contact with one of the Order’s Archdruids in 2001, only to find the Order inactive. In 2003, after a series of discussions about AODA’s potentials, he was brought into the Grand Grove as Archdruid of the East. On December 21, 2003, on the resignation of Grand Archdruid Betty Jean McCloud Reeves due to ill health, he moved to the North as the seventh Grand Archdruid of AODA.

He currently lives in Ashland, Oregon with his wife Sara, an herbalist, musician, and writer who serves as Almoner of AODA and is also active elsewhere in the contemporary Druid movement.

John Michael Greer’s published books include:
